Bush’s newest attacks on women!

I’ve gotten emails from the organizations I am a member of regarding Bush’s latest attack on birth control, here’s a few articles on the subject:

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2008/07/30/a_new_attack_on_birth_control/

http://www.planetwire.org/details/7775

http://www.workers.org/2008/us/bush_0731/

Here’s where you can give Bush a peice of your mind about this underhanded move:

http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/spp08sadv2

Check this out, the Bush administration is trying to classify birth control as abortion and trying to stop insurance companies from paying for birth control (while still letting them pay for Viagra let me mind you!), it seems as though the Bush administration is trying it’s best to put women’s rights in a blender in it’s last hours.

Oh, and that’s not all these snakes have up their sleeves! They are also trying to veto the newly passed “paycheck fairness act” which is made to remove the wage gap! Seems they want to keep women as second class citizens…..

Here’s the info on the paycheck fairness act:

http://www.speaker.gov/blog/?p=1474

And Bush is trying to veto it! Really now, just how far is Bush planning on going in his last hours?

Self defense for the modern woman

We all have that thought in the back of our heads “What if I’m attacked?” even a woman of my size and strength thinks about it from time to time because one of my biggest worries is being attack from behind and caught off guard, I can handle an attack I see coming but the element of surprise can make a lot of difference.

With most self defense items the would be attacker can see you have it before it is used, now how is the attacker ever going to learn their lesson if they never feel the bite of that stun gun or the sting of that pepper spray or mace because they get the chance to see it before attacking and back off?

The answer is simple: catch them by surprise!

Below are some links of small, discreet self defense items that can be used to catch an attacker off guard just as they would catch you off guard and to teach those would be attackers a lesson they’ll never forget!

The cell phone stun gun

Small, easy to grab and use and fits right on your hip in a normal looking cell phone holder. Looks like a normal cell phone and they’d never expect the bite this baby has! Well priced too so you won’t have to spend a fortune to teach those would be attackers a lesson!

Lip stick pepper spray

Tiny, disguised to look like a normal lipstick case which can easily be slipped into your pocket or purse. Very well priced. Only worry I have with this item is that it may be hard to get to in time if you are caught off guard by an attacker or if you keep it in your purse and your purse gets knocked off. With this I would say to keep it in hand when walking, after all, this little guy won’t look funny in the palm of your hand.

Pepper spray ring

At hand at all times, looks just like a normal ring and there is near no chance of it being knocked out of your reach! Decently priced, not a bad looking accessory either. It uses the strongest pepper spray formula on the market so you can bet this baby has a sting!

More cell phone stun guns:

http://store.womenonguard.com/-strse-715/Cell-Phone-Stun-Gun/Detail.bok

http://store.womenonguard.com/-strse-659/Cell-Phone-Stun-Gun/Detail.bok

Tasers

Oh the cream of the crop in non-lethal self defense, they aren’t as discreet as the other items I’ve listed, they aren’t cheap, but they ARE very effective, some models even come with a lifetime replacement so if used in self defense and left behind to give the attacker the full 30 seconds of shock while you escape, just send them the police report and they replace it. Not as discreet as the other items but very effective!

Of course I’m going to also stress the importance of hand to hand combat skills, these attackers, they get off on power, on controlling another human being, on imposing their wants on an unwilling victim, many of them are larger people and one day you may not have self defense items with you thus you must use your body as a weapon! Most say to take self defense classes but honestly, though effective, sometimes those aren’t enough. Attackers want to hurt you so you must be willing to hurt them, you must be willing to do whatever you must to keep yourself safe even if it means seriously injuring your attacker! You must have as much disregard for their safety as they have for yours, you must not see an attacker as a fellow human being, you must see them as an immediate threat to your health and life and deal with them accordingly!

Take self defense classes if it makes you feel better, but my personal suggestion would be boxing classes, mixed martial arts and maybe wrestling classes if you feel up to it, fighting styles that can really hurt your attacker, after all, an attacker doesn’t give a damn if they injure you, so why should you give a damn if you injure them?!

Oh, and those of you who have that “It won’t happen to me” mentality, my question is: What will you do if it does?

He’s the Real McCain!

He’s the real McCain!

And no, that’s not meant as a compliment…….

McCain tried to keep his voting record on abortion in the shadows, since pro-choice is still the majority view in America, he knew it could very well cost him any hope of being elected, however, as we all know, in the political game, skeletons don’t often stay in the closet and McCain’s skeletons are getting dusted off and ready to be put on display to the world.

McCain tries to maintain a moderate conservative image for voters so the people think he is in their corner, but here’s the truth: McCain’s conservative image is nothing more than a mask.

He is anti-choice, not just slightly anti-choice, but extreme anti-choice, electing him would be like electing another Bush. McCain voted in support of Bush’s anti-choice bills, now many of you may know that, but there are also many who do not. What’s McCain’s excuse for not mentioning his pro-choice views to the world?

“My record is clear,” McCain said when asked by reporters earlier this year, “I am a pro-life conservative.”

So let me ask: How many common Americans, between work, taking care of bills, maintaining their home, helping their family and caring for their children (if they have any) really look up and read ALL of every politician’s voting record? Well McCain assumes we all have the extra time to do so, sorry to break it to him, but the common American doesn’t have their own secretary to do research for them the way McCain does!

So, since I had time while healing up from having my baby (I couldn’t really do much else other than look stuff up, since it hurt too much to stand) I decided to do a little research on McCain, not only for my own curiosity (because I was never planning to vote for him anyways, guy just gives me a bad feeling) but also to be able to share my findings with those of you who read my blog but don’t have the time (or patience) to sift through thousands of search engine results (and as I learn when I dug deeper into McCain’s voting records, my “gut feeling” about him was right on target!)

Oh, and by the way, he has also missed about 60% of votes…………Not a very constant candidate, is he? How can we trust a man who can’t even fulfill his duties in his current office with the future of America?

Yea, I’m definitely voting democratic this year and I’m not even a democrat, I’m a libertarian!

Wife and Maid are NOT interchangeable terms!

“Why do you want to go to college? You don’t need a college degree to cook and clean.”
~My father when I asked him about going to college.

Yup, that’s the kind of house I grew up in, sounds like I would be at least in my 40s growing up with a family like that…guess again, I’m only 20. There are still people who think that being a wife means being a maid.

Women are no more made for housework then men are and any guy who thinks his wife’s purpose in life is to clean up after him needs to get his head checked!

Yes, that’s it, no long blog this time, I just had to get that out because there are still people who think a wife’s job is that of a maid!

The Media Image

Now, let me start off by saying that I don’t have anything against those who have had or are planning to have plastic surgery, if it makes you feel better about yourself then that’s all that matters, what I am discussing here is how the media portrays beauty to young women and teens. Mostly the way the media ideal gets pounded into the minds of teens. I have no problem with the people being shown as ideal, the problem I have is that the “media ideal” is promoted as average and sets the standard for average women when the very ideal the media is promoting clearly is not average.

Now, I want you to think about an actress who is portrayed as beautiful, just pick on that is often shown in the role of a desirable woman in movies, now think about her features, most shown in the role of desirable women are thin, normally below a size 3 (American sizing), no flaws or distinguishing marks on her face (moles, even small ones and things of the like are absent from most leading role actresses), every hair in place, not a flaw on her……now look around you, think of the people you know, do you know any women who compare to the actress in your mind’s beauty? While some of you may, I’m sure many don’t, and even those who do know one woman who fit’s the media image will know even more who don’t. You know why that is? Because, as much as the media might want you to think that their media ideal is average, it really isn’t.

I know, I know, it’s just a movie right? It doesn’t effect our lives………..or does it?

The mind of a teenage girl is already being bombarded with ideals and expectations, she’s being pulled every which way as it is. Now try to put yourself in her mindset, the mindset of someone trying to find their place in this world, trying to find their worth, defining who they are and who they are going to be in this world, then add in the expectations from her peers, the teasing she gets because she’s not one of the pretty girls and then throw this media image into the blender and hit puree. What you get is a person with low self esteem who is reminded that she’s not expectable in the eyes of other’s every time she turns on the TV or goes to the movies.

Here’s the thing, even if other’s see her as beautiful, she won’t see herself that way because there’s always someone on TV who’s better looking, thinner, has prettier hair, something that will make her feel like she is lacking, like she is flawed. Do realize I’m not talking about an adult with her life set, I’m talking about a teen who is only starting to realize who she is and who she wants to be, this confusion and low self esteem can carry on well into her 20’s. You have to ask, why are women so worried about their looks? Well the answer is a complicated yet at the same time simple one.

We are always reminded of appearance, be it by the media, by our peers, sadly sometimes by our own families, as women so much of our worth is judged solely by our looks and I’m not talking just about weight, by desirable facial structure, by absence of distinguishing marks, by stuff as stupid as the shape of our rear ends, by things that are purely genetic that we have no control over…ah but we do, and it’s called plastic surgery.

Don’t like your cheek bones? Have thin lips? Boobs not big enough? Don’t fit the media image? There’s plastic surgery for that, a little scalpel cutting into your flesh and adding unnatural things into your body to make you beautiful, but is it really worth it? Do we really have to fit into the media image? Is it really that important?

Well, plastic surgeons want you to think it is, otherwise they’re out of a job which means they can’t afford their expensive cars and high end toys. See, they are taking advantage of the media image for monetary gain and thus taking advantage of confused teens with low self esteem who grow up to be confused young women with low self esteem, but still over the age of 18 which means they can now get plastic surgery to “fix” all those things their peers made fun of them for, even if there is really nothing wrong with the way these girls look in the first place. Many people who have plastic surgery done for cosmetic reasons are very beautiful to begin with, there’s nothing wrong with them, but media and peers (often influenced by the media) as well as so much of her worth being based on her looks in comparison to the media image make her believe that there is something wrong with how she looks.

The media image is a very destructive force aimed right at our nation’s youth, more so young girls though it also targets young boys to a point as well, but since society places so much value on a women’s looks, the teenaged girls are a lot more pressured into fitting the media image.

So, what can we do about it? The media is a pretty big force to reckon with, however, we can take steps in our own homes, in our own families, to assure teens, both male and female alike, that they don’t have to confirm to that media image. It’s an issue not many parents, aunts and uncles or teachers tackle, it’s one of those things we hope someone else will do for us, but there in lays the problem, most of us expect someone else to be the voice in this issue, but not many step up to the plate.

We need to let children and teens know that, not only are the actions in movies not to copied, but also that there is no need to try and copy the looks of the actors and actresses either, that the media is the media and nothing in movies is to be confused with real life, not the actions and not the images. We are quick at telling our kids that people who die in movies aren’t really dead and that it’s all pretend, but we fail to explain to them from a young age that the ideals portrayed in movies as average are just pretend as everything else in the movie, that the average woman doesn’t look like that, that the average man isn’t built like that, that nothing in the movies are real life, yes, these actors and actresses look like that but the way that perfect appearance is portrayed as average is not the true average and that those actors and actresses make a living off their acting skills and their looks (Sometimes even their acting skills are null and void) and that is why they look so perfect, because they have to in order to keep their jobs.

If we were to explain that to them from a young age then, chances are, it wouldn’t effect them so much when they hit their teens because they would know that the only reason those actors and actresses look so “perfect” is because they have to in order to keep their jobs and that the media ideal does not reflect what the average person should look like.

It’s bigger than Pro-life or Pro-choice

I am Pro-Choice, this is no secret, but when it all comes down to it, pro-life or pro-choice is insignificant compared to the suffering of already living children who suffer daily due to lack of food and medical supplies.

These children ARE ALIVE, they DO FEEL, they know what pain is and, many of them know that they may not make it to adulthood…..

But how do you think they would feel if they knew that there are people like us who have the means to help them but use that money in the pro-choice/pro-life debate? Shouldn’t these living, breathing, loved children come first? They are here, in our own country, overseas, they are on this earth already and need help getting the things we take for granted every day: Food, Medical care, Clothes, Clean water……these things are not readily available for them and sometimes the very water they drink is what’s killing them!

So, who’s life is more important to you? An eight week old embryo or a 5 year old child who may not make it to age 6 due to lack of basic needs and will feel every hour of suffering up until their last breath?

The ball’s in your court now………..

Stop using late term abortion photos as examples of abortion

Warning: Some graphic images will be in this blog and some of what I say may piss a few people off so remember that you are proceeding at your own risk, if you become offended easily by this topic I suggest you hit the back button now….

“Oh look, this is what abortion looks like, how gross is that? Look all these LATE TERM abortion photos, even though most abortions don’t happen late term this should gross out the pro-choicers” ~What must be going through a pro-lifer’s mind.

Here’s what they fail to tell you: Most abortions (58%) take place BEFORE the 8th week of pregnancy! 88% before the 13th week of pregnancy, so late term abortions are pretty rare (Sources: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5109a1.htm ) so what does the fetus look like during this time frame? Here’s the photos:

Week 8:

Week 10:

Week 13:

(Photos from http://www.pregnancy.org/pregnancy/fetaldevelopment1.php )

Now, what do the pro-lifers use as examples of abortions? For those of you who don’t know, here’s one of their pro-life websites for you to review:

http://www.100abortionpictures.com/Aborted_Baby_Pictures_Abortion_Photos/

You’ll notice that the pro-life website doesn’t tell you what week the abortion took place during, they want you to think that a fetus looks like that early in pregnancy. If that’s not a scare tactic then what is? The babies in those photos are late term abortions, 20-24 weeks, which only 1.5% of abortions taken place in that time frame (source: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5109a1.htm ), some past the 24 week mark, which is by the way only done for medical reasons, 24 weeks is the cut off date for having an abortion in the USA which means some of the babies in those photos were aborted due to medical reasons the others account for only 1.5% of all abortions.

So here’s a little hint for the pro-lifers who use late term and medical abortion photos as a scare tactic: We aren’t stupid, we know that the photos you are using are the minority of all abortions and some are even from medical abortions, so cut the crap and tell the whole story, not just the part that supports your view!

An answer to child support entrapment

First off, as much as we wish it didn’t happen, guess what, it still does, women who get pregnant just for child support, though they are surely a small percentage, it still does happen and it does give all women a bad name. Yes, I normally take women’s side on most issues, but one this one, as a self respecting woman, I can’t condone this kind of action. We can have abortions without the father of the child having a say, but if we want to keep that option, we have to give them an option in return.

Here is my idea for a solution:

Women have a limited time frame for an abortion, so I say that men also have a limited time frame during the first stages of a woman’s pregnancy to sign away all rights and responsibility to the unborn child, as long as the women still has time to have an abortion if she so chooses.

The current cut off time for an abortion is at 24 weeks, so, men should have the option to sign away rights and responsibility up until that 24 week mark, the time limit needs to be there so that the man cannot turn around after that 24 week mark and say “You know, I changed my mind, I’m signing away my responsibilities and you still have to have the kid because it’s passed 24 weeks”. As women we have 24 weeks to make up our minds, we should extend the same option to men with the same time limit. Signing away his responsibilities would mean no child support but also no rights to the child either, so if he didn’t want the child he would not be responsible for it just as a women is not responsible for caring for a child when she has an abortion.

It’s just an idea, could use some work I am certain of, but hey, it’s a start and all ideas have to have a starting place.

Anti-feminist arguments just don’t hold water.

Oh how many damn times do we here anti-feminist males spewing that bullshit when a women shows discontent about sexism? Oh, but let someone point out them showing discontent for sexism and they call it “justified” so I guess it goes like this in their minds:

A woman speaking out about discrimination: Playing the victim
A man speaking out against discrimination: Justified

Um, yea, what happened to that “logical” mind anti-feminist men claim to have?

One Yahoo!Answers member made a very valid point when he said:

“The people who say that feminism is no longer needed are
the people who thought it was never needed in the first place.”

Anti-feminists normally to have one of five reactions when faced with an inquiry which challenges their views:

1: Insult
2: Try to dodge the question
3: Blame someone/something else
4: Cite bias sources which support their views and are written by people who share their views
5: Make claims that they cannot back up thinking no one will second guess them

How many times have you heard the old “Women are weaker than men, it’s a biological fact” line spit out without any scientific proof to back it up? You want to know why men are normally stronger than women? It has nothing to do with biology or science, it has to do with how they are raised as well as how much media pressures women into dieting.

Let me explain:

Most little girls are encouraged to play with dolls and teddy bears as children, when their bodies are still developing, this carries over to their teen years when they are more encouraged to stay inside and learn how to cook and clean. Those activities do not promote muscle growth nor do they require much strength. As adults women are also greatly pressured to stay thin, which means dieting, and, here’s something most of the diets don’t tell you: Dieting reduces not only fat but also muscle mass! Since there is so much emphasis on how much a women weighs and what dress size she is instead of her overall health, most diets aimed at women are meant to reduce overall weight which means they are also losing muscle! All this bullshit about lighter, skinnier women being “healthy” is just helping keep women weaker!

(Dieting and muscle loss sources:
http://www.halls.md/fat/muscle.htm
http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2006/09/13/exercise_for_weight_loss_tips_and_truths.php
http://www.netfit.co.uk/fatwei.htm )

Now about the boys, they are encouraged from youth to go outside, play sports, run around, climb trees, all of those muscle building activities which help shape their bodies for years to come. As men most diets aimed at them are based on muscle gain, not so much to help them lose weight but to help them replace that fat with muscle.

(Examples of diets aimed at men:
http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/diet/healthy_diet/diet_for_men.htm
The first article clearly says “men shouldn’t follow a diet designed for females” I wonder why? Maybe because the ones designed for women make them lose muscle mass?

http://www.annecollins.com/diet-plan-for-men.htm

A “1800-calorie” eating plan for men, compared to the “1100-calorie” eating plans the same website suggests for women. Basically less intake means less for the body to work with.)

I have used male diet programs with much success, lost less muscle mass (only about 5% of my weight lost was muscle, my doctor confirmed this) while a friend of mine, same age, also the same body build before dieting used one of those diet plans made for women. Guess what, after dieting she went to the doctor and found out that almost 30% of the weight she lost was muscle mass!

In short, the strength of a gender has no basis in biology but instead in social pressure, upbringing and by suggested (and pressured) dieting.

Additional info: Here’s a study showing that women acutally gain MORE strength than men when following the same training routine:
